In a continued effort to support academic excellence and ensure quality education, the MTN Foundation hosted its annual Scholarship Award Ceremony in Abuja, recognizing some of Nigeria’s brightest young minds. This scholarship initiative, which is part of the Foundation’s Youth Development program, is focused on empowering high-performing students, particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), as well as blind students from public tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
The prestigious scholarship program also acknowledges the top ten scorers of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), ensuring that academic merit is not only celebrated but supported.
Key Attendees and Notable Guests
The ceremony was graced by several esteemed guests and stakeholders, including representatives from academic institutions and education boards. Among them were Dr. Othman Ibrahim, Deputy Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, standing in for Prof. Tanko Ishaya, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos; Mrs. Basirat Agbabiaka, Head of the Disability Unit at the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), representing the Registrar, Prof. Is-Haq Oloyede; and Mrs. Aishatu Sadauki, Director of the MTN Foundation. Additional notable attendees included Mr. Ohwofasa Obazenu, Senior Manager of Sales and Trade Development at MTN Nigeria, Dr. Anwalu Danlami from the Federal College of Education, Bichi, and several alumni of the MTN Scholarship Scheme from universities in Northern Nigeria.

Mrs. Aishatu Sadauki, Director of the MTN Foundation, delivered an inspiring speech highlighting the transformative power of education in shaping the future. She urged the new scholarship recipients to take full advantage of this opportunity, encouraging them to build networks, pursue excellence, and contribute positively to society.
“For the past 13 years, the MTN Foundation has championed the belief that anyone, regardless of background, can be a trailblazer, a problem-solver, and a visionary. Today, we are proud to welcome 380 new scholars who have shown immense potential and perseverance. Their commitment to academic excellence is commendable, and we are dedicated to supporting them as they continue their educational journey,” she said. She also reminded the scholars to use this opportunity to empower others and be agents of positive change in their communities.
Prof. Tanko Ishaya, represented by Dr. Othman Ibrahim, added that the scholarships are more than just financial support, but a gateway to future success. He applauded MTN’s unwavering commitment to education, even amid economic challenges.
A Life-Changing Opportunity
The scholarship award ceremony saw the new scholars being officially presented with their grants, worth N300,000 per year. This comprehensive support covers tuition, book allowances, and a stipend, and will continue annually until graduation as long as the scholars maintain the required academic performance. The program provides recipients with financial relief, allowing them to focus fully on their studies and excel.
To date, the MTN Foundation has invested over 2.5 billion naira in scholarships, empowering countless students across Nigeria to achieve their academic dreams and make meaningful contributions to the country’s development.
